You Don’t Need A Weatherman
WYNONNA EARP Episode 109 – Bury Me With My Guns On – Spoilers ⁓
Sheriff Nedley (Greg Lawson) is critical of Deputy Haught’s report on the Jack of Knives, a report that suggests “otherworldy” things might have been at work. “Really, Nicole,” he says, “I like a joke as much as the next guy, but I don’t have time for this.” He tosses the report in the wastebasket, and after putting up token resistance, Nicole (Kat Barrell) agrees to rewrite it. After she leaves, Nedley retrieves the crumpled paper from the trash.
The next afternoon, The Sheriff fills Dolls’ coffee mug with whiskey and suggests they should talk.
NEDLEY: “You ever notice that we get some pretty high winds here in Purgatory? You ever notice that the weather vane in the town square always points west? Took it down, oiled it myself. Works fine, any direction. But a high wind comes up, always points west… Well, any given day, Purgatory is like an ER on a full moon, but you know that, because I think you came here to investigate the paranormal. Don’t deny it. Guessed it a while back. Decided to keep it under my hat.”
DOLLS: “Smart man. And why don’t you keep it there?”
NEDLEY: “Look, whatever’s going on in this county nearly got our only deputies killed, and I don’t know about you, but if I lose mine, I gotta go deputize some fool like Champ Hardy.”
He gives Dolls (Shamier Anderson) his accumulated information on BoBo Del Rey (Michael Eklund), and Dolls agrees they should work together on a case-by-case basis.
On her way out, Nicole runs into Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley). Waverly wants to talk about the relationship they don’t have yet, and Nicole wants to find out the true nature of Purgatory, so communication is difficult.
Gus (Natascha Girgis) has a talk with Waverly, tells her she sold the bar, and hands her a cheque. “Don’t cash it for a week or so,” Gus says. And when Waverly asks “What’s this?” Gus continues: “It’s freedom, honey. You’ve been doing what others want you to do for so long. Now you can do whatever it is you want. Live your life. Remember, some of the best things in life are the surprises it throws us. About what we want. Who we want. You’ve always been an honest kid. Don’t stop now.”
Soon after that, Waverly visits Nicole at the Sheriff’s Office.
In May 2016, Kat Barrell told Bridget Liszewski of The TV Junkies: “It’s a scary thing telling someone you like them and taking that leap with them. I think it was a perfect first kiss for them and I love it. It’s so beautifully executed and the dialog is so beautiful. It’s very real that Waverly gets all frazzled, giddy and unsure of herself and Nicole just lets her go.”
After her ordeal with Two-Faced Jack in Episode 1.8, Black Badge makes her undergo a psych evaluation, during which the analyst reveals something from Wynonna’s past. “The bomb in the Bleaker Case was traced back to a young woman who ran briefly with the Bandidos,” says the interviewer. “You ran with the Bandidos.” Then she asks if Wynonna considers herself a murderer, and doesn’t get an answer. Wynonna fails the evaluation, and is suspended until further notice.
Before she leaves, Dolls says something intriguing: “Technically it’s not the gun that kills them. Its…” He never finishes the sentence. It could be that the gun only sends the revenants to “hell” because they believe it will, but such a notion is never mentioned.
Constance Clootie (Rayisa Kondracki) takes the bones of her sons to a motel room and discovers she can assemble only one complete skeleton. Her resurrection spell brings back one of her sons (Drek, played by Zachary Parsons-Lozinski), but he is disfigured. Bobo stops the two of them from leaving the Triangle and insists she give him the “lead” (clue) she promised him in exchange for finding the bones of her children. When she can’t do that, Bobo burns the unused bones she left in the motel. This also kills Drek since some of his brother’s bones were part of him.
With no further use for Clootie, Bobo gives her over to Doc (Tim Rozon), who binds her with the gallows silk provided by The Blacksmith in “Walking After Midnight” (Episode 1.7). He and Wynonna take the witch to an isolated area of salt plains, where they bury the witch up to her neck. This satisfies Doc’s need for revenge, and appears to appease Wynonna’s desire to deal with her enemies in an ethical way.
We find out the reason Clootie put Doc in the well. Her demon husband created the Earp Curse, but, she says, “Us girls like to take vindictiveness to the next level, don’t we, Wynonna? And I wanted my own revenge on Wyatt, so I went after what Wyatt loved most, his best friend…When Wyatt found you buried in a whore’s muff instead of underground – when he learned of our deal – his heart broke in two. Then I threw you down a well, so that even if Wyatt softened, came looking for you…” She leaves the rest unsaid.
