Spysnogging the Morrigan
LOST GIRL – Episode 406 – Of All the Gin Joints – SPOILERS ⁓
Lauren (Zoie Palmer) dances as she packs. The Morrigan (Evony Fluerette Marquis, played by (Emmanuelle Vaugier) ) arrives unexpectedly bearing pizza and beer, and the doctor largely ignores her. Quoth Evony: “Your hostessing skills, they suck ass, disco queen.” Lauren is very protective of one ‘fragile’ box, and we find out that it contains DVD’s of Star Trek Enterprise, STTNG, and Voyager, along with the movies, as well as collectible (and fragile) Kahn action figures. No mention of DS9, but she probably just left that out because the sentence was too long. The question is: Why Kahn?
Rather than action figures of Doctors McCoy, Crusher, and Bashir, she chooses to collect replicas of a genetically engineered tyrant from the Eugenics Wars. The genetic research that led to Kahn’s creation is a bit similar to the work of the late Dr. Isaac Taft, a villain thwarted by Lauren in “Those Who Wander” (episode 3.13).
Lauren and Evony get into an ethical debate around using humans as medical test subjects. It becomes apparent that Evony doesn’t find Lauren’s ethics bothersome. Forcing Lauren to abandon her beliefs would make her a less effective researcher.
Evony is surprised and pleased when Lauren kisses her, but is unaware that Lauren used the kiss to get a DNA sample, which might be regarded as unethical were it not for Evony’s endorsment of the use of human test subjects in medical experiments. It is worth noting that Lauren collected her sample from a transparent film she had applied to her lips, yet Lauren was apparently surprised by Evony’s visit. How did she know that Evony would be available to be kissed?
Meanwhile, at the Dal, an opera singer named Ianka (Lara Jean Chorostecki) collapses shortly after her arrival. She has come to see Bo. The singer is an Alkonost, a Russian bird-fae who can jog memories with her song and has a death-note in her repertoire. Ianka has the power to help Bo remember things she has forgotten, and Bo really wants to remember why she joined the Dark. When Ianka sings to her, Bo has a vision of her grandmother Isabeau’s crown.
Isabeau (Alisen Richmond-Peck) last appeared in “Flesh and Blood” (episode 2.22). She will not appear again until “Here Comes the Night” (episode 5.7).
It is discovered that Ianka’s lover Marcus (Colin Lawrence) put an explosive crystal in her necklace which he can detonate by remote control. Trick explains that the necklace is made of Atlantean Quartz. To neutralize the explosive, he sends Kenzi to Lauren’s place to obtain volcanic argon, the liquid form of which, he said, was needed to cool the explosive and render it harmless.
Some believe that ancient Atlanteans stored their scientific data in quartz crystals. Energy can also be stored in such crystals, but not in sufficient quantities to create a meaningful explosion. Atmospheric argon is much the same as that found trapped in rocks, though there might be slightly less Argon 40 in atmospheric argon because of exposure to cosmic rays. Trick might not have needed the liquid argon. What he might have needed was a reason to get Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) out of the Dal. Kenzi already found out that Ianka was an old flame of Hale’s, so there must have been something else.
Ianka’s lover has, it turns out, ulterior motives for helping her escape, so she sings him to death, and dies as a result, leaving Bo with only a recording to help jog her memories.
In the final scene, The Una Mens turn up and arrest Dyson for unspecified crimes, entirely unconnected to events surrounding Ianka’s death.
