Hades, Nyx, and the Music Box
LOST GIRL – Episode 509 – 44 Minutes to Save the World – SPOILERS
Zee (Amanda Walsh) warns Bo (Anna Silk) not to use the music box to summon her brother Hades (Eric Roberts), Bo does it anyway, hoping that the God of the Underworld (who is also her father) can deal with the threat posed by Nyx (Shanice Banton). Hades returns to Earth in the form of a medical doctor, just in time to prevent Dyson’s son Mark (Luke Bilyk) from dying of a stab wound he received in “End of Faes” (episode 5.8).
Hades and the rest of his family have been alive for a long time. The reason for that might be that years ago they developed medical technology that prevented death entirely. Hades examines a whiteboard diagram at Lauren’s clinic, and seems to know a lot about genetics.
HADES: “My organic chemistry is a bit rusty, but this looks like stem cell research. Ambitious for a hobby.”
LAUREN: “I’m trying to isolate mesenchymal cells. Highly amenable to genetic modification and tissue engineering.”
HADES: “If you can crack that code, that’s the holy grail. The fountain of youth. Everlasting life.”
LAUREN: “A girl can dream.”
Nyx is similar in many ways to the Reality Bomb in “Journey’s End” (Dr. Who episode 4.13). She takes over the body of Iris, who earlier had taken over the body of Cee Cee (Cecelia) Lawrence. All Nyx had to do was wait for midnight and the core of the earth would turn black, extinguishing life on the planet, but she is impatient (a trait she might have absorbed from her human host body) and decides to visit a downtown dance club. The music playing when Iris/Nyx turns the club bouncer to dust is “Feel it Comin’ On” by Life Bitter Soul.
The mark of Hades, a glowing handprint that first appeared on Bo in “Of all the Gin Joints” (Episode 4.6), is the reason Bo survived Nyx’s touch. Hades put it there to protect her, and because she is Hades’ daughter, that mark is indelible. It will never fade.
At Dyson’s gym, with less than an hour till midnight, Bo uses the music box to trap Nyx, while Hades kills the body she is inhabiting. When Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) tells Mark that Iris is dead, the music we hear is “Run Cried the Crawling“ by Agnes Obel. The only way to dispose of Nyx was to put her into the music box that Hades used to travel between Tartarus and Earth. With the box full of Nyx, it could no longer be used to send Hades home.
Meanwhile, Zee (Amanda Walsh) and Heratio (aka Hera) (Noam Jenkins) have Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) tied to a chair in their condo. Since Tamsin’s valkyrie power to cast doubt won’t work on Zee, the Valkyrie behaves like an expertly manipulative human and talks her captors into doubting both themselves and one another. Zee finally changes out of that evening gown she’s been wearing since the dinner party and heads to the Dal to reclaim the Aegis Shield stolen from her by Trick (Rick Howland).
After recovering the Shield (by threatening to kill Tamsin if she didn’t get it), Zee goes home and continues her Tamsin-provoked domestic squabble with Hera, finally ending it with a lightning bolt.
The body that Hera is inhabiting (and that took the lightning bolt) belongs to Kevin Brown, a human married to Alicia Welles (Lisa Marcos) with whom Dyson (Kris Holden Ried) has become romantically involved. Though Alicia doesn’t know it, Kevin is still not dead. He is in a coma at Lauren’s clinic
Lauren and Bo leave the clinic together, taking about where to go for dinner. Lauren walks into the street and is hit by a truck, but she does not die. Instead, she sucks Bo’s chi like a succubus and begins to heal herself. It seems that Dr. Lewis has acquired Fae powers, a development that should give Evony (Emmanuelle Vaugier), hope of regaining her faeness (which were taken away by Dr. Lewis in “Origins” (episode 4.12).
