- January
- January 19 – CELTIC CONNECTIONS FESTIVAL – Glasgow, Scotland
(with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra)
Nadia Younes wrote about the performance at Celtic Connections for The Skinny: “The evening’s headliner Laura Marling performs orchestral reworkings of tracks selected from across her five albums, arranged beautifully by Kate St. John. Accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley, Marling begins with epic versions of the tracks that opened her 2013 album Once I Was an Eagle; Take the Night Off, and I Was an Eagle. Marling tells the audience she’s learnt a lot about Glasgow’s history during her two days in town, and how much she has enjoyed her time in the city, before introducing Goodbye England (Covered In Snow). It’s a slow-burner, but as more audience members begin to pick up on the joke, ripples of applause break out and eventually lead to cheers…for her final song, Marling performs latest single Wild Fire, from her upcoming album Semper Femina, alone with just her acoustic guitar.”

Bouquets filled with white blossoms and thick dark green leaves were nestled between speakers and draped over microphone stands, spilling over the ledge into the photo pit below…Behind the group, several long white banners depicting symbols from the artwork in Semper Femina, Marling’s sixth and most recent album, hung from the ceiling.”

LUMP – Mike Lindsay and Laura Marling
- February
- February 17 – St Giles-in-the-Fields Church (charity gig) – London, UK
The performance at St. Giles in the Field was reviewed for The Telegraph by Patrick Smith: “Alone with her guitar, her flowing white shirt matching her complexion, she laid bare her gusty parables about solitude and self-realisation to the 200 fans genuflecting before her,” said Smith. “Drawing mainly from Semper Femina, she opened with Wild Fire, her Hampshire accent drifting into an American drawl, before weaving through the dreamy waltz of The Valley and the melancholic Next Time, her eyes fixated on the balcony above.”

Lee Adcock reviewed LUMP for Drowned In Sound: “If you fast forward to the woozy and wonderful single ‘Curse of the Contemporary’ (I won’t stop you – it’s too mesmerising to ignore), you’d imagine the blazing bright desert that Siouxsie Sioux and company trekked through in ‘Arabian Nights’. But behind that, you’d feel the cool breeze of droning flutes that loop through the lagoon, especially the half-Portishead, half-Joan As Police Woman cavern of ‘Rolling Thunder’. And if you push forward, the last heavy machinery of mankind hums like a Kraftwerk steam engine through ‘Hand Hold Hero’. As distant as these coordinates might seem, they’re all on the same grid, so that LUMP resides in a fully rendered & self-contained space; each zone allows the other to exist.”

Gabiela Page wrote of the Transhed show for Keep Cardiff Live: “Opening the set with a four-strong salvo of songs from her 2013 album ‘Once I Was An Eagle’, the 15-minute compilation, of which she playfully remarks to the audience “I thought I’d ease you in with a short 15 minute song”, set the tone for the rest of the evening, in that Marling has no problems with commanding a stage and playing as if she were joined by others…Laura’s stagehand deserves a special mention from the night, as she revealed herself that he had to lend an extra helping hand with putting her guitars over her shoulders due to an unfortunate fall in the woods days prior, which resulted in her putting her back out, making twisting for guitar straps an uncomfortable affair.”
