The Shape Of Things To Come
LOST GIRL – Episode 410 – Waves – SPOILERS ⁓
Rainer (Kyle Schmid) and Bo (Anna Silk) kill the Una Mens. AFterward, Bo insists that she must understand completely why that was necessary. Rainer takes her hand and everything that happened when Bo was on Rainer’s train Is revealed.
When Bo pushes her against a wall and holds a knife to her throat, The Handmaiden (Linzee Barclay), says: “Oh my, you’re sweating.” She suggests that Rainer is a ‘great man’ and tells Bo, “We need you.” In Norse myth, Odin’s wife Frigga has twelve handmaidens. That a handmaiden is caring for Rainer foreshadows the arrival of characters from Greek myth in Season Five.
Rainer (aka The Wanderer) has a very selective variety of amnesia. He remembers what his power once was, but does not remember who removed it and put him on the train. (His power turns out to be foresight, the ability to anticipate his opponent’s moves.) The handmaiden calls him a great man, which suggests that she might know what Rainer has forgotten. Rainer seems to recognize Bo after she revives a dead butterfly being kept in a bell jar in the train’s baggage car. Bo remembers a traumatic incident from her childhood when she could not save a wounded butterfly from death. In “There’s Bo Place Like Home” (Episode 3.7), Bo’s adoptive mother tells her: “You always make everything better. Do you remember that Sunday in Church when that dying butterfly came through the window and it landed on your hand and you tried to help it fly and it just couldn’t. You cried all day.” It is unclear how Rainer knows about that.
On leaving the train, Bo knows she will lose all memory of what happened there, so she arranges to leave breadcrumbs that will point the way back. “All the clues are in place,” she explains. “When I return home, they’ll guide me back to you, even though I won’t remember. When your crows brought us that gorgeous singer to perform for us, I told her to come find me. And then there’s Hugin. When I open that jar [the jar of black smoke she opened in the Dal last episode], he will guide me back, and if that is not enough, there is one thing that I know for sure will work — a contract with The Dark.”
The crows Hugin and Munin, whom we met in “Destiny’s Child” (Episode 4.9) are clearly helping Rainer. Odin had two ravens named Hugin and Munin who flew around the world and reported to him what they saw on their travels.
Bo told her friends that she needs time to sort things with Rainer, and has stopped communicating with them. Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), whom Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) is teaching to be a shadow thief, steals Lauren’s panties without disturbing her outer clothing, then further distracts Dyson and Lauren from Bo by announcing she has taken a new case. (Kenzi and Bo’s detective agency is still functional. Lauren is helping out.) The new client is Diana Clare (Karen Cliche), a marketing exec for a company called Alaria Technologies. Her legs were severed slightly above the knee while she was swimming in the company swimming pool. Fae don’t bleed much when appendages are amputated. When Diana’s stumps bleed very little. When Vex (Paul Amos) chopped off his own hand in “Let the Dark Times Roll” (Episode 4.5), there was a similar lack of exsanguination.
Alaria is a genus of parasitic flatworms. It is also the name of an edible alga.
Kenzi and Dyson infiltrate Alaria, and find it infested with mermaids. Dyson thinks merfolk are dangerous and implies some of them blew up his ship as it was “on its way to the new world”.
At maturity, Merfolk get ‘magic legs’ for a year to walk the earth. Diana says it’s like a Rumspringa, when the Amish community leave their home for a while to explore the world, then the decide whether or not to come back and live a traditional life. Darren Clare (Brandon Firla) somehow made his time on land permanent, much to the displeasure of his sister Dominique (Kate Todd). Diana is Darren’s other sister, who some years ago managed to join him on land, so Dominique took Diana’s legs away.

This letter from Dominique to her brother Darren was mailed from a postal code in Toronto’s east end, but addressed to an American zip code.
To catch the vengeful mermaid, Lauren stands in the saltwater pool as bait, and uses a subsurface sonic device to disable Dominique. This is the only scene in the series with Lauren (Zoie Palmer) in a swimsuit.
Darren threatens to cut off Kenzi’s legs and give them to Dominique so she can also remain on land, but all three merfolk are vanquished when Lauren discovers that fresh water destroys them by reverse osmosis.
Trick (Rick Howland) visits Bo and pleads with her not to kill the Una Mens (which she has already done) because when they die, all their powers will be transferred to the Origin Seed, which has been stolen from Trick’s safe by persons unknown.
