Revisiting Dead Lucky – Bo Meets Cassie
LOST GIRL – Episode 105 – Dead Lucky – SPOILERS ⁓
Dead Lucky is the first Lost Girl episode written by Emily Andras. It contained Lost Girl’s first Star Trek reference. When Eddie the body jumper (Dylan Roberts) invoked “Scout’s honour”, swearing that he had nothing to do with scamming Mayer, he (possibly inadvertently) gave the Vulcan salute instead of the proper hand gesture. It was not noticed by either Bo or Dyson, but Lauren (a known Trekker) would have caught it had she been there. There are at least two kinds of body jumper. Eddie is a Hsein. Another sort of body jumper, a Jumbee, turns up in “Lovers. Apart” (Episode 4.3).
Bo’s high school boyfriend Kyle (Matt Purdy), is shown for the first time, as is Bo’s birth mother Aife. Both appear to Mayer’s niece Cassie (Vanessa Matsui) in a vision. (It is Cassie’s first appearance as well.) Kyle will appear again in scenes excerpted from this flashback in There’s Bo Place Like Home (Episode 3.7). Aife will make her first official appearance in The Mourning After (Episode 1.10). When Eddie swears on “scout’s honour” that he did not scam Mayer. He gave the Vulcan salute instead of the appropriate Scout’s oath gesture.
The blonde corpse dancing to Black Velvet by Alannah Myles was played by Emily Lineham, aka Melisa Moore, who also appears as a dancer in Faes Gone Wild (Episode 2.7). Linehan’s father, Hardee T. Lineham, is Heinze, a dealer in illicit wood from Bali, in Can’t See The Fae-rest (Episode 2.11). The song Black Velvet won Alannah Myles her first Grammy in 1990.
Dark Fae are depicted for the first time as not entirely evil. Mayer (Aron Tager), a Luck Fae, is funny, and both ruthless and ethical. When Bo discovers that it is one of his relatives that has betrayed him, he indicates that the fellow will not be killed, and asks Bo to keep quiet about it. “The Dark Fae don’t believe in mercy,” Mayer says, “but he’s family.”
The restaurant Mayer operates from is actually Sea-Hi Famous Chinese Food on Bathurst Street in Toronto (North York).
Two of Trick’s best lines are in this episode. When Bo wonders why body jumpers are regarded with such distaste, he responds “Humans are for feeding off of, not for wearing.” and, when Bo and Dyson begin having noisy sex in the back room, he asks: “Did my troll get out?”
A nymph named Daphne is mentioned but not seen. Dyson uses her as an example to explain to Hale what it’s like to be with a succubus. (He lost Daphne’s number and he doesn’t even care.) This could be the nymph Dyson speaks of previous experience with in his conversation with another nymph named Clio (Mia Kirshner) in In Memoriam (Episode 4.1).
Miss Knickerpants, an American shorthair, was the first cat to be seen on LOST GIRL. A potential client named Sizemore (Maria Vacratsis) shows a photo of the cat to Kenzi, saying she believed the feline was possessed and trying to kill her. Bo, having been van-napped by Mayer, failed to show up for the meeting and the client decided to find another investigator.
