Kitsunes, Cabbitts, and Doctor Taft
LOST GIRL – Episode 313 – Those Who Wander – SPOILERS ⁓
At the start, Bo takes the wounded Tamsin back to her place and calls on the kitsune for help. (Bo met them while rescuing Kenzi from one of their fellow fox fae in “The Kenzi Scale” (episode 3.6). Amanda (Allison Dawn Doiron) and Kasey (Sidney Leeder), who are clearly valley kitsune, manage to get the bullet out of Tamsin, but in the process they discover that Tamsin is dying of old age. (That’s why her hair is falling out). Bo and Tamsin go see Massimo the Druid for a concoction of valkyrie hormones to speed Tamsin’s recovery. They then arrange to be captured by Taft.
Dr. Taft (Shawn Doyle) has been explaining his backstory to Lauren in hopes of gaining her cooperation. Seems that, when Taft was a child, his brother was beheaded by a wendigo (also a type of Fae), and that drove him over the edge and launched him on a mission to acquire Fae powers for himself and other humans by blending human and Fae DNA. Once captured, Lauren tells Taft what he wants to hear, but she has already set a plan in motion to defeat him.
Lauren must convince both Bo and Taft that the Fae no longer have her loyalty, leading to this exchange:
LAUREN: “Did you know that my name isn’t even Lauren?”
BO: “Whoever you are, I know you. And I love you.”
After Lauren operates, Taft believes the marrow transplant has made him half wolf. Instead he has become part cabbitt, making him a tasty meal for Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), who is seen in the full wolf form for only the second time in the series. The first time was in O Kappa, My Kappa (Epiaode 1.3).
Bruce (Rob Archer), the Morrigan’s hired muscle, turns out to be a well-educated, poetry-quoting charmer who is fond of Kenzie. The two of them take off for parts unknown in the Morrigan’s car, with Kenzi saying mysteriously: “Where we’re going we don’t need roads.” (If Kenzi screws up her budding relationship with Hale by dealing with Massimo the Druid for Fae powers, Bruce might have a chance.) Kenzi’s foot fetish, first mentioned in episode 2.9, manifests again as she compliments Evony (Emmanuelle Vaugier) on her shoes, which Evony says she uses to ‘crush rodents’.
Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) and Bo have a great fight scene. The valkyrie’s internal conflicts have her bordering on madness here, and that makes Tamsin look a bit like Hudson Leick‘s Callisto in Xena: Warrior Princess. On Tamsin’s Chevy pickup truck, which is demolished, one of the bumper stickers reads: “You like to tailgate / I like to shoot people / Everyone has their thing.” The second bumper sticker is even worse.
Suneetha the Cabbitt (Julie Brar) is eaten by Aife. This after learning in “Hail, Hale” (episode 3.12) that her husband is dead, and having Lauren swipe some of her DNA. Cabbitts are a cross between a cat and a rabbitt – quick like a bunny and just as prolific. It is not clear what traits a cabbitt inherits from the feline side of the family.
Hale (K C Collins) lets Trick (Rick Howland) out of the car trunk where he’d been since the previous episode. A rusted-out 1957 Pontiac is shown prominently as the two walk through a parking lot, and that might foreshadow a coming threat from Hale and Trick’s recent past. Stella (Debra O’Dell), who guided Bo through the Dawning in “The Ceremony” (Episode 3.9), arrives to spirit Trick off to Scotland and relative safety.
Bo (Anna Silk) disappears in a puff of black smoke. Trick was snatched from the Dál at the end of Season 2 in much the same way by The Garuda.
The episode’s best scene happens when Aife, with sudden ferocity, devours the hapless Cabbitt Suneetha (Julie Brar). Aifa changes from a wounded and slightly addled captive to an intensely feral succubus in a matter of seconds. It is the most frightening moment in any LOST GIRL episode, and was completely unexpected.
