Elder Fae and Their Pets
LOST GIRL – Episode 404 – Turn to Stone – SPOILERS ⁓
Bo (Anna Silk) remembers little of recent events. She tells Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried): “The last thing I remember is being taken from the Dal and then waking up in the woods.” Tamsin is almost two weeks old and looks like a teenager. Bo and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) go out for the evening and convince Tamsin (Eliana Jones), to stay home. They feel safe leaving her there because Trick secured the place with an Ignis Rim, a wall of flame that blocks the doorway when malicious Fae approach. (It mistakes Bo for malicious and Kenzi has to turn it off.) While they are out, two humans intrude. Tamsin scares them off using Valkyrie powers (but not before they steal the furniture), and this makes the Valkyrie have another growth spurt.

Karen Beatty’s height is 153 centimeters. Zoie Palmer is 167 centimeters tall. Karen/Lauren’s birthday is 5 June 1981.
Lauren (Zoie Palmer) finds herself in a dungeon. She tells Crystal (Ali Liebert), who is handcuffed to a nearby water pipe: “Spy-banged. I’ve been here before. In your shoes actually.” The term “spybang”, meaning to have sex with someone to distract them or extract information (usually at the behest of another) was first used by Kenzi in “It’s Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away” (episode 2.6) when she told Lauren: “Let’s cut the crap. I know you did a nice thing, helping Bo against her mom, but you also spybanged her for the Ash and broke her heart.” Crystal spybanged Lauren in “Lovers. Apart (episode 4.3).”
Lauren tells Crystal of a time when she was known as as Karen Beattie, and made the explosives for an attack on an oil pipeline planned and executed by her brother that inadvertently killed several people. Lauren’s real name was first revealed in the Lost Girl episode “Adventures in Fae-bysitting” (episode 3.11) when Dr. Taft (Shawn Doyle) told Lauren he knew about her past.
Bo and Kenzi visit Massimo (Tim Rozon) to get back the stuff he stole from them, and Bo learns that the spell he cast on her for The Wanderer at the end of Season Three was designed to mark her so she could travel between dimensions, but he can’t or won’t tell her any more about that. They agree to get him a rare Japanese Salsola soda herb from “the Light Fae doctor” to settle Kenzi’s debt.
At Lauren’s place, Kenzi locates the appropriate herb, and decides to come clean with Bo about all the stuff she did while Bo was away, but she does not mention losing all memory of Bo (see episode 4.1). One wonders if she has lost the memory of that, because Dyson says nothing about it either.
Another Ignis Rim this one of unknown origin, appears in Lauren’s doorway as they try to leave. Bo thinks that Massimo put it there to delay them, likely because he figured out that Tamsin is back. After being doused with water, Kenzi leaves to get a Pa Kua mirror and an ogre eye to neutralize the doorway protection.
While she’s doing that, Bo searches Lauren’s place and finds the necklace Lauren planned to give her along with a note that reads: “For giving me the freedom to love. And I do.” Then Bo gets a visit from a stone gargoyle. The lights go out, and when they come back on, the gargoyle is gone, but not before taking a bite out of Bo’s arm. The gargoyle was not affected by the Ignis Rim, so either it entered Lauren’s place without passing through the doorway, or it is not recognized as a malicious Fae.
They visit Massimo a second time, and find he has lured Tamsin who is now physically an adult (played by Rachel Skarsten), to his lair, and has cut off a lock of her hair. Tamsin sprouts wings, which means she is on her final life cycle, and Bo has to talk her out of killing Massimo.
In the process, Bo hugs Tamsin and the Valkyrie says “That’s what love feels like.” (Earlier Tamsin asked Dyson “What does love feel like?” and he didn’t want to talk about it, but said “When you feel it, you’ll know it, and when it’s gone, you’ll never want to lose it again.”) This might be the moment when Tamsin falls in love with Bo.
The succubus confiscates the lock of Valkyrie hair and tosses it into the lava cauldron the Druid uses to cook up spells. Massimo dives into the fire after it.
Back in the dungeon, Doctor Lewis is presented with equipment and blood samples, and commanded to diagnose the ailment of a Fae Elder who has fallen ill. Lauren discovers that the elder is afflicted with spongiform encephalopathy. Scully discussed Mad Cow Disease in The X-Files episode “Our Town” Allowing Tamsin to watch The X-Files might be a subtle acknowledgement of this.
Massimo told Bo that the gargoyles serve Fae Elders. A gargoyle seems to be keeping track of Bo, and when she confronts The Keeper (Christine Horne) about this, Bo is told that her “blood has spoken” and she is Dark Fae. The Una Mens sent the gargoyle after Bo to get a sample of her blood. If The Una Mens also imprisoned Lauren, it’s possible that one of them has Mad Fae Disease.
